Podiatry in New South Wales & Queensland

CAHC’s AHPRA-registered podiatrists provide comprehensive foot and lower limb care across our Greater Sydney & Queensland clinic network. Our podiatrists address the full breadth of podiatric conditions — from diabetic foot assessments and biomechanical evaluations to custom orthotics, nail and skin care, sports injuries, children’s podiatry, and aged care foot health. All CAHC podiatrists hold current AHPRA registration under the Podiatry Board of Australia and are proud members of the Australian Podiatry Association (APodA). Vietnamese-speaking podiatrists are available across the CAHC network, and our podiatrists work as part of a fully integrated multidisciplinary team — particularly valuable for diabetic patients also working with CAHC Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians, and for NDIS participants requiring coordinated allied health support.

What Is Podiatry?

Podiatry is an AHPRA-regulated allied health profession focused on the assessment, diagnosis, and management of conditions affecting the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. All CAHC podiatrists hold current AHPRA registration under the Podiatry Board of Australia — meaning they meet the nationally mandated standards for clinical training, professional conduct, and ongoing education.

The scope of podiatry is broad. At CAHC, our podiatrists assess and manage diabetic foot complications, biomechanical problems affecting gait and lower limb alignment, sports and overuse injuries, skin and nail conditions, children’s foot and gait development, and the foot health needs of older adults and people living with disability.

CAHC podiatrists work within our multidisciplinary allied health network — collaborating with Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians for diabetic patients, with Occupational Therapists for aged care residents and NDIS participants, and with Physiotherapists for complex lower limb and post-surgical presentations. This integrated model means a single referral pathway can connect patients with the full spectrum of chronic disease or disability support they need.

Paediatric Podiatry

Children’s feet and gait patterns are still developing, and early assessment can make a meaningful difference. CAHC podiatrists see children for concerns including flat feet, in-toeing, growing pains, Sever’s disease (heel pain in growing children), and general lower limb development questions. If your child is walking on the inside of their feet, experiencing leg or heel discomfort, or you have noticed changes in how they move, our team is happy to assess. NDIS-funded paediatric podiatry is available for eligible participants — eligibility depends on your individual NDIS plan goals.

Diabetic Foot Care in New South Wales & Queensland

Diabetes can affect circulation and nerve sensation in the feet, which means foot problems can develop more quickly and go undetected without regular monitoring. At CAHC, our podiatrists provide diabetic foot assessments as part of your broader diabetes management team — working in conjunction with your GP and, where relevant, your endocrinologist or diabetes educator.

A diabetic foot assessment at CAHC includes a skin and nail assessment, vascular assessment, neurological screening (including sensation testing), wound risk classification, footwear review, and personalised foot care advice. The frequency of podiatry visits for diabetic patients depends on individual risk level — your GP and CAHC podiatrist will advise on the appropriate schedule for your situation.

Podiatry is an eligible allied health profession under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan. Patients with diabetes as a chronic condition may be eligible for up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year with a GP referral. Rebate amounts are subject to change — confirm current rates with your GP or the clinic.

For patients managing diabetes, CAHC’s Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians work within the same network — giving GPs a single referral source for multidisciplinary chronic disease support.

Ask your GP about a CDM referral for podiatry.

Biomechanical Assessments and Custom Orthotics

A biomechanical assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of how your foot and lower limb function during walking and everyday activity. Your CAHC podiatrist will assess foot posture, gait patterns, muscle strength, joint range of motion, and footwear to identify any contributing factors to your presenting concern.

People who may benefit from a biomechanical assessment include those with heel pain, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, shin splints, flat feet, high arches, sports overuse injuries, or work-related lower limb discomfort — as well as diabetic patients and NDIS participants who may require orthotic prescription as part of their management plan.

Custom orthotics are prescribed following a biomechanical assessment and are designed to be worn in shoes to support foot function. They are individually prescribed for your presentation — not every patient with foot pain requires custom orthotics, and your podiatrist will discuss whether they are appropriate for you. Where prefabricated orthotics may be sufficient, your podiatrist will explain the difference and advise accordingly.

Most major health funds with Extras cover contribute toward the cost of custom orthotics. HICAPS on-the-spot claiming is available at CAHC clinics — check your annual orthotic limit with your fund before booking, as this is often a separate limit from general podiatry consultations.

Fees and Funding for Podiatry

Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan

Podiatry is an eligible allied health profession under the Medicare CDM plan for patients living with a chronic condition of 6 months or more — diabetes is the most common referral indication, though other eligible chronic conditions affecting foot health also qualify. Patients may access up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year with a GP referral. Rebate amounts are subject to change — confirm current rates with your GP or the clinic.

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)

Podiatry may be funded under NDIS Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living (therapy supports) for participants whose plan goals include foot health or lower limb function. This is relevant for participants with disability-related foot health needs, diabetic foot complications, or orthotic requirements. Eligibility depends on your individual NDIS plan goals — speak with your support coordinator or contact us to confirm.

NDIS Services

DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs)

Gold Card holders: podiatry is covered for all clinically necessary treatment, with no out-of-pocket cost. White Card holders: podiatry is covered for accepted service-related conditions, which may include lower limb injuries or diabetic foot complications arising from service. A D904 referral form is required. Rebate amounts and conditions are subject to change — confirm current entitlements with DVA or the clinic.

Support at Home Program (Aged Care)

Podiatry services are available under the Support at Home program for eligible aged care clients. Services include general foot care, nail care, and diabetic foot monitoring — available as home visits or at clinic.

Support at Home Program

Private Health Insurance

Podiatry consultations and custom orthotics are covered by most major health funds under Extras or Ancillary cover. HICAPS on-the-spot claiming is available at all CAHC clinics. Annual limits and per-visit caps vary by fund and level of cover — check your policy before booking. Custom orthotics are often subject to a separate annual limit from general podiatry consultations — confirm both limits with your fund.

Self-Funded / Out-of-Pocket

No GP referral is required for a private podiatry appointment at CAHC. Contact your nearest clinic for current fee information, including orthotic pricing.

What to Expect at Your First Podiatry Appointment

Step 1 — Before you arrive: Bring your referral letter and CDM plan from your GP (if using Medicare), your Medicare card, health fund card, and any relevant medical reports or imaging. Wear or bring the footwear you wear most often — your podiatrist will assess it as part of the appointment. If you are a diabetic patient, bring your GP’s most recent diabetic review notes if you have them.

Step 2 — Health and foot history: Your podiatrist will ask about your presenting concern, any relevant medical conditions (particularly diabetes, circulation, or neurological conditions), your current medications, and your lifestyle and activity level.

Step 3 — Assessment: Your podiatrist will carry out a thorough clinical examination of your feet, ankles, and lower limbs. Depending on your presentation, this may include a skin and nail assessment, vascular checks, sensation testing, gait analysis, and joint range of motion testing.

Step 4 — Clinical findings and management plan: Your podiatrist discusses their findings and proposes a management plan — which may include treatment during the appointment, a custom orthotic prescription, footwear recommendations, or a scheduled review.

Step 5 — Treatment begins: Many presenting concerns can be addressed at the first appointment. If custom orthotics are recommended, a casting or scanning process will be arranged, and orthotics are typically ready within a few weeks.

Our Podiatry Team

All CAHC podiatrists hold current AHPRA registration under the Podiatry Board of Australia and are members of the Australian Podiatry Association (APodA) — meeting the national standards for clinical training, professional conduct, and continuing professional development. Vietnamese-speaking podiatrists are available across the CAHC network, which is particularly valuable for Sydney’s Vietnamese-Australian community, where diabetes prevalence means regular podiatric care is an important part of chronic disease management.

Are You a Medical Practitioner?

GPs can refer patients for podiatry via a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan for up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. The most common indication is diabetes, though eligible chronic conditions also include peripheral vascular disease and other chronic conditions affecting foot health. A CDM plan referral to CAHC also connects diabetic patients with our integrated diabetes team — including Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians operating within the same network — offering GPs a single referral source for multidisciplinary chronic disease management.

CAHC accepts DVA podiatry referrals for Gold and White Card holders. NDIS Support Coordinators can refer participants directly — our team will confirm eligibility and arrange a service agreement. For pre-authorisation questions or to discuss referral pathways for complex presentations, contact your nearest CAHC clinic directly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does a podiatrist do?

A podiatrist is an AHPRA-registered allied health professional who assesses, diagnoses, and manages conditions affecting the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. At CAHC, our podiatrists address the full scope of podiatric care — diabetic foot assessments, biomechanical evaluations, custom orthotic prescription, ingrown toenail management, sports and overuse injuries, skin and nail conditions, children’s foot development, and aged care foot health. All CAHC podiatrists hold AHPRA registration under the Podiatry Board of Australia and are members of the Australian Podiatry Association (APodA).

Do I need a GP referral to see a podiatrist?

No referral is needed for a private podiatry appointment at CAHC — you can book directly online or by phone. However, a GP referral under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan is required to access your Medicare rebate (up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year). DVA patients require a D904 referral form from their treating doctor. NDIS participants do not need a GP referral for podiatry, but should confirm with their support coordinator that their plan includes funding for this support.

Is podiatry covered by Medicare?

Podiatry is covered under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan for patients who have been living with a chronic condition for 6 months or more and have a GP-initiated care plan in place. Eligible patients can access up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. Please note this is not bulk billing — a gap payment may apply. Rebate amounts are subject to change — confirm current rates with your GP or the clinic. Diabetes is the most common qualifying condition for podiatry referrals under CDM.

Does Medicare cover podiatry for diabetes?

Yes. Diabetes qualifies as a chronic condition under the Medicare CDM plan, and GPs can refer diabetic patients to a CAHC podiatrist for up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. Annual or more frequent diabetic foot assessments are strongly recommended for people living with diabetes, as regular monitoring helps detect foot concerns early. A CDM plan referral to CAHC also connects diabetic patients with our Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians within the same network. Rebate amounts are subject to change — confirm current rates with your GP or the clinic.

What are custom orthotics and do I need them?

Custom orthotics are individually prescribed foot insoles, designed and fabricated following a comprehensive biomechanical assessment. They are worn inside shoes to support foot function for your specific presentation — whether that is heel pain, plantar fasciitis, flat feet, knee pain, or a sports overuse injury. Not everyone with foot pain requires custom orthotics, and your CAHC podiatrist will assess your gait, foot posture, and footwear before recommending them. Where prefabricated orthotics are a suitable option, your podiatrist will discuss the difference and help you make an informed decision.

Does private health cover orthotics?

Most major health funds with Extras cover contribute toward the cost of custom orthotics. The covered amount and annual limit vary significantly depending on your fund and level of cover — HICAPS on-the-spot claiming is available at CAHC clinics. It is worth checking your policy specifically for the orthotic or appliance annual limit, as this is often a separate limit from your general podiatry consultation benefit. Rebate amounts are subject to change — check your current entitlements with your fund before booking.

How do I treat an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails should be assessed by a podiatrist rather than managed at home — self-treatment, including cutting the nail at the corner or attempting to remove the nail edge, can increase the risk of infection and is not recommended. CAHC podiatrists can manage most ingrown toenails conservatively in the first instance. In persistent or severe cases, a minor podiatric procedure performed under local anaesthetic in a clinical setting may be recommended — your podiatrist will discuss whether this is appropriate for your situation and explain what is involved before proceeding.

Can I use my NDIS plan for podiatry?

Podiatry may be funded under NDIS Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living (therapy supports) for participants whose plan goals include foot health, lower limb function, or disability-related foot care needs. This includes participants with diabetic foot complications, chronic skin and nail conditions, or requirements for custom orthotic prescription. Eligibility depends on your individual NDIS plan goals — speak with your support coordinator or contact us to confirm.

Do you offer podiatry home visits?

Yes. Home visits are available for aged care clients, NDIS participants, and patients who are unable to attend a clinic in person due to mobility limitations or other circumstances. Home visit podiatry is particularly valuable for elderly patients requiring regular nail and skin care, and for aged care facility residents. Please contact your nearest CAHC clinic to confirm home visit availability for podiatry in your area.

At what age should children see a podiatrist?

There is no minimum age — CAHC podiatrists see children across all age groups. Parents who notice their child walking on the inside of their feet, complaining of leg or heel pain, tripping frequently, or showing signs of flat feet are welcome to contact us for an assessment. Many children’s foot and gait concerns respond well to early review and, where appropriate, orthotic support or targeted exercises. Our podiatrists approach paediatric assessments in a relaxed, child-friendly way.

Can podiatry help with plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common presentations for podiatrists. At CAHC, our podiatrists assess the contributing factors to heel and arch pain — including foot biomechanics, footwear, activity load, and lower limb strength — and develop a management plan tailored to your situation. This may include exercise advice, custom or prefabricated orthotic prescription, taping, footwear modification, or a combination of approaches. Management plans are developed on an individual basis, and your podiatrist will keep you informed of progress and adjust the plan as needed.

What languages are available for podiatry at CAHC?

Vietnamese-speaking podiatrists are available across the CAHC network — please verify availability at your nearest clinic when booking. This is particularly valuable for Sydney’s Vietnamese-Australian community, where diabetes prevalence means regular podiatric care plays an important role in long-term foot health management. The TIS National interpreter service (Translating and Interpreting Service) is also available for patients who require an interpreter in another language — contact your nearest clinic for details.

How often should I see a podiatrist if I have diabetes?

The recommended frequency of podiatry visits for people with diabetes depends on individual risk level, as assessed by both your GP and your podiatrist. People at lower risk may need an annual diabetic foot assessment, while those at higher risk — including patients with peripheral neuropathy, a history of foot ulceration, or vascular complications — may need more frequent monitoring. Your CAHC podiatrist and GP will work together to advise on the appropriate schedule for your situation. Podiatry is part of your diabetes care team — it does not replace regular GP reviews and broader diabetes management.
