Schizophrenia is a very complex condition affecting more than 24 million people or 1 in 300 people worldwide according to WHO. It is considered complex and multifaceted condition affecting one’s cognitive skills such as thinking, memory, attention, and problem-solving.
It is a highly stigmatised condition due to lack of understanding and representation is displayed in the media. It is often portrayed as a ‘split personality’, however, Schizophrenia is derived from the terms ‘to split’ – schizo and ‘the mind’ 🧠– phrene.
The onset of Schizophrenia starts in early adulthood or late adolescence, typically between the ages 15 – 28.
Schizophrenia symptoms are identified as significant impairments to one’s perception to reality and changes in behaviour.
Symptoms can include:
- Sensory hallucinations (particularly audio – hearing voices)
- Delusions
- Disorganised thinking
- Changes in body language or emotions
- Extreme agitation or slowing of movements
- Impaired social functioning
The exact cause of Schizophrenia is unknown. Factors which may be associated with an increased risk of developing Schizophrenia includes:
- Genetic factors
- Neurological imbalances
- Structure and Functional Brain Abnormalities
- Environmental factors (e.g. substance abuse)
