Visiting a Podiatrist for a diabetes check should be a regular occurrence, once diagnosed with diabetes.
When should you see a Podiatrist?
When diagnosed, you should familiarise yourself with service providers who are able to help manage and treat this condition
- When you’re initially diagnosed with diabetes.
- Feeling/seeing changes to your feet that are secondary to uncontrolled diabetes i.e. numbness, loss of hair growth, nail and skin colour changes.
Why you should see a Podiatrist!
Diabetes can have a negative effect on the feet if uncontrolled.
Seeing a Podiatrist can prevent toe and foot amputations, foot ulcers and other foot related issues that occur in individuals with diabetes.
Diabetes is the leading cause of non-injury related lower limb amputation (Siitonen et al. 1993; The Global Lower Extremity Amputation Study Group 2000).
Seeing a Podiatrist for a diabetes check should be a regular occurance similar to seeing a dentist or optometrist.
Podiatrists will conduct a diabetic foot assessment to asses the quality of blood flow to the feet and the sensation of the feet. This could be done at least once a year to monitor progression of symptoms and to be able to identify and manage worsening symptoms.
